Breeze, Louisiana, 2010

As usual, right after I woke up, I took a long, brisk walk from the hotel. Even though it had been a few years since my feet had stopped hurting, it still amazes me.

Jeff and I had breakfast. Lorraine was there and, of course, we talked about her bowling league. Mrs Reine was making her delicious egg omelettes as she does on the weekends.

After breakfast we went and visited Denny’s church with Mary Lynn. Then we went to the Shreveport Country Club to meet Martin and have brunch. After we ate we hit some balls and then headed out to play nine holes.

Later that evening Jeff and I sat down to really focus on a format structure for the first motorcycle-training DVD. With our years of experience in our respective fields, we were able to come up with what I felt was a good first hour for a series. The films were aimed at the first-time buyer who needed some direction on how to start their riding adventure.

I said: ‘Running my school I noticed an increase in the variety of types of bikes that people owned and rode – sports bikes, cruisers and sport tourers. Too many riders were getting into trouble from not knowing the differences in each bike’s handling and performance. Each of these differences affected the time and distances it took to make the radius of the corner. It depended on the bike’s weight, wheel base and geometry so the riders had to change accordingly. To be able to make the right adjustment the rider first has to be aware of those differences.’

I said I could ride each bike through the same corners and we could shoot from different angles. Then we could line up the bikes next to each other in a static shot. I could talk about each bike’s design differences and the adjustments needed when riding them because we are creatures of habit. We try to ride each bike in the same way but it doesn’t work that way. It is what I’ve been trying to figure out for 15 years: how to show that in a visual way so it is easy to understand for the rider. I just hadn’t figured out how!

‘That would be great,’ Jeff said.

We ate dinner and had a nice talk about being at this hotel. Jeff could see I was doing great. ‘I understand why you would want to be here.’

‘Jeff, it’s where I am supposed to be right now. It’s not the hotel or the club; it’s all the people. It’s what I feel inside.’

He left early the next morning as I was heading out for my walk. I got up earlier than usual because I wanted to spend some more time with Mrs Ada. Her mom, Lou, had passed away a few days earlier. I had grown close to Mrs Ada and we’d had a few laughs about my laundry ever since she decided I wasn’t doing it any more because I didn’t do
